Reindeer and Tree Felt Christmas Decorations - Beak Up Crafts

Christmas is coming and it’s time to start making decorations and ornaments in earnest. This week I’m running a felt decoration class to make these cute reindeer and tree decorations. They are really easy to put together and don’t really need too much instruction, but if you would like to have a go then I’ve created two downloadable templates which you can get here: Reindeer and Christmas tree templates

What You Need:

For the Reindeer –

  • Dark brown felt
  • Mid brown felt
  • Red felt
  • Fabric glue
  • Brown embroidery thread
  • Embroidery needle
  • Googly eyes
  • A small amount of fibrefill stuffing
  • Twine

For the Christmas tree –

  • Green felt
  • Fabric glue
  • Sparkly decorations
  • Green embroidery thread
  • Embroidery needle
  • A small amount of fibrefill stuffing
  • Twine

How to Make it:

  1. Cut out the pieces of felt needed from the template above. TOP TIP: To make sure the front and back match perfectly, I fold over the felt and cut both out at the same time. Make sure your scissors are nice and sharp!
  2. Put the two pieces of felt for the reindeer’s head together, and starting at the bottom, sew together using a blanket stitch. (Click here to find out how to do one).
  3. When you get to the end of the first ear, take an antler and place it in between the two pieces of felt. Switch to a running stitch to sew it in place.
  4. Knot the twine in a loop and sew in place with a running stitch.
  5. Add the second antler and repeat step three.
  6. Continue to blanket stitch until there is a 2 inch gap at the bottom of the reindeer. Stuff with fibrefill stuffing.
  7. Sew the gap shut then fasten off.
  8. Glue the eyes and nose into place.

  1. As step one for the reindeer decoration.
  2. Put the two pieces of felt for the tree together, and starting at the bottom, sew together using a blanket stitch. (Click here to find out how to do one).
  3. When you get to just before the top of the tree, knot the twine in a loop and put it in between the two pieces of felt. Sew in place using a running stitch.
  4. Continue to blanket stitch until there is a 2 inch gap at the bottom of the tree. Stuff with fibrefill stuffing.
  5. Sew the gap shut then fasten off.
  6. Glue the sparkly decorations into place.

And that’s it! You’ve just made two pretty Christmas decorations.

I hope you like this DIY. If you make either the reindeer or tree ornaments I would love to see some photos!

This post is also my entry for the Able Skills competition on Victoria’s Vintage blog – fingers crossed!

Lots of festive love,
